1x1x1: The Container Show

March 4th, 2016

1x1x1: The Container Show expands the idea of a container from a literal object that holds another object to the abstract idea of a boundary that circumscribes the outer and within. By drawing a certain boundary between the outside and the inside, a container serves to delineate, contain, and constrain.

The delineation of a boundary illustrates a clear portrait of what elements constitute within the container, and what is outside the container. This distinguishing of what gets included and excluded allows a container to serve the function of containment. By holding certain elements within the boundaries of a container, the container is able to protect and preserve those elements housed within from the exterior. A room contains a person’s livelihood, housing the person physically and also archiving the person’s memories. A container not only contains, but also constrains. A container can be a limitation of what a person could achieve. A container distorts a person’s perspective, confined to the shape of the container. A container such as a person’s socioeconomic status can  financially constrain one from consuming certain foods, geographically constrain one from being able to travel to certain places, and politically restrain one from expressing certain opinions.

This exhibition is designed as a single container, examining the idea of a container in a holistic manner. The concept of a container is fluid, and this exhibition offers to contain those range of ideas as one.
