Momento Mori

February 13th, 2015

We've all seen them, tucked away in the shade of trees along highways, standing starkly on the side of a barren stretch of road, or looming out of the darkness along a winding country byway, each altar was erected to the memory of loved ones killed at precisely that spot at some sad moment in the past. Altars are also a way of saying “This person, dear to me, was here and will not be forgotten.”

Creating an altar is a way of capturing an essence that has long since past. But altars and memorials don’t just have to be created for your late grandmother. They can also be created for yourself, as you die little deaths all of the time. You must acknowledge the pieces of yourself that you’ve lost along the way. Commemorate the cocoons you’ve shed. These shed skins have allowed you to move on and leave home. Allow us to honor your middle school boyfriend, your angsty phase, the day you lost your virginity and your childhood best friend.

We are looking for your shrines, altars and memorials to pieces of yourself that you want to remember. These creations can be constructed for anything that has made an impact on your life thus far -- ideas, people, experiences, points in time, places, phases, animals etc. You can use any medium that speaks to you -- sculpture, photography, video, sound, painting, drawing, collage performance art etc. Don’t be afraid to use color – this is a celebration of life.
